There comes a time in every housewives day when she has to tackle the laundry and get some of the c
leaning done, especially if this household involves children too, then these tasks are simply endless. So when you go to the cleaning cupboards there are usually several partially used bottles of branded cleaning products and normally households have a favourite fabric detergent and softener. Have you ever thought about the number of potentially harmful chemicals in your cleaners and detergents and also, where do all the chemicals go? Water is of course cleaned to make it safe to drink but what about the water that is no longer safe to drink because these chemicals cannot be removed or simply aren't?

The use of these chemicals is what's contaminating our natural waterways and wildlife because these potentially harmful chemicals are just let loose into the surrounding eco systems to do whatever damage they will. This is where your choices as a consumer can help to stop nasty chemicals entering the water supplies and effecting wildlife, crop growth and eventually our drinking supply.

There have been many products developed to help stop this contamination of the planets' water supply by using natural and eco friendly cleaning supplies and detergents, such as lemon and vinegar, that are all bio-degradable and harmless to the water supply. The eco-friendly products use recycled packaging whenever possible, cleaning products from plants and mineral based ingredients with no enzymes, perfumes or chemical enhancements with cleaning results as good as the typical branded cleaners. Some of these eco friendly products are available in normal supermarkets alongside the normal range and may cost slightly more, but knowing you will not be harming the planet is certainly worth it for a lot of people.

There are many great products that have been developed for a more green lifestyle, such as energy efficient light bulbs and showers but the newest revolution is laundry balls, that go into your laundry instead of detergent and last for up to 3000 washes. This is very economical, giving great cleaning results and there is no need for softener which again reduces the need for ironing and removes the chlorine from the water to retain the colours of your clothing and saves you money! As a natural product, it uses magnetic charges to clean your clothes, is safe for use on baby clothes and sensitive skin because there are no harsh chemicals and is of course kinder to the planet too.

There are plenty of ways to help the planet with insulation, recycling, lowering energy consumption and walking or using public transport instead of the car. The situation with our fresh water supply is as serious as toxic gasses and carbon footprints because without a supply of clean fresh water this planet is doomed. All life relies on water being a life giving source of hydration rather than a potentially fatal chemical infested liquid.

David is passionate about saving the planet. Selling a range of eco wash balls as well as bamboo nappies and hooded dressing gowns that are great for the environment, David currently works for Well Cultivatedin the UK.
